Meditation Techniques – If You Can Breathe, You Can Meditate

What an encouraging thought!  If you can breathe, you can meditate.

if you can breathe, you can meditate

Author and meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg wants everyone to reap the many benefits of learning simple meditation techniques

That is what meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg says to Marilynn Preston in this interview with The San Fernando Valley Sun.

WHAT MEDITATION IS NOT.

Meditation isn’t a religion. You don’t have to be Buddhist or Hindu or a yogi to practice. The techniques Sharon teaches can be done within any faith tradition or be done in an entirely secular way. You don’t need special skills or a huge chunk of time every day. (She recommends 20 minutes, but if you’ve only got five, start there.) Meditation is not an attempt to stop thinking, she writes. It’s “a way to recognize our thoughts, to observe and understand them, and relate to them more skillfully.”

WHY PRACTICE MEDITATION?

Meditation is a medical miracle. Clinical studies show it promotes wellness, reduces stress, boosts learning and memory, improves sleep and depression, lowers blood pressure and much more. Sharon focuses more on the emotional and psychological benefits: learning how to stay in the moment; letting go of judgments; becoming aware of a calm and stable center that gets us through tough times. Meditation isn’t passive, she says. “Deepening our concentration brings us power and energy and healing.”  read the original story here

My guess is ….. if you are reading this page, then you are breathing … (grin).  And according to Sharon Salzberg, if you can breathe, you can meditate.

You might want to check out the book below.  Or even better, if you want a free copy of a mindfulness meditaion, please just make a short comment in the comment area below, and we will get you a free copy the same meditation technique (mindfulness) that Sharon Salzberg teaches.  We love to hear from our visitors!

I began meditating about 3 months ago. It was challenging at first. My mind would not shut off. I have learned to tune it all out and have experienced amazing results. My focus is better, I am more patient and calm. All of this happened and I didnt even notice. Then one day made the connection. I am also happier and less stressed. Bad days still happen for me, but I take them one moment at a time, knowing that, that moment will pass and happiness is in the near future. I still have a long path to enlightenment and would love to have a copy. Thanks so much for posting this!

  33. Becky Geiger says:

I would LOVE a copy. Have recently tried meditation, but not very sucessfull at it. I want it to become something I do everyday, but its not easy to conquer. 39. Mary says:

  40. I would love a copy of this book, great post, I have just begun meditating, and all resources are welcome

  41. My experiences in trying to establish a meditation practice have largely been successful — that is, using techniques picked up here & there (including Jon Kabat-Zinn’s “Wherever You Go, There You Are”), I’ve been able to get into a meditative state. But even though the benefits are so clear to me, I have not been successful in keeping to a regular practice. Help!

    • Hi Beth…. when it’s hard to KEEP a practice, I often suggest making the time committment smaller… really REALLY small, and then buidling from there.

What’s easier for you…to shedule 10 minutes for yourself in the morning, evening, or during the day?

Start with 10 minutes every single day… no matter what…
and build up a bit from there… and if you NEVER manage more than 10 minutes,
then those still be some of the finest minutes you invest in your health and happiness….

What’s best for you? Morning or evening? Just 10 minutes?
If it’s morning…. make the bed and meditation right there
If it’s evening… that’s even easier, just sit on your made bed,
set an alarm for 10 minutes, and you’re ready to go!
