Research is piling up proving the many health benefits of meditation.  This article from The Times Daily gives a quick and useful look at why you should consider doing more yoga and meditation.

Not only is it good for your physical health, but the release of stress will improve the quality of your life within a week or two.

“Yoga and meditation and those types of things are evolving,” said Lee Renfroe, an assistant professor in health promotion at the University of North Alabama. “Part of it has to do with health care costs and health care issues, and the fact that more people are going to be looking for more ways to impact their health outside of seeing a doctor.”

Renfroe said there are five components of exercise: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility and body composition. Yoga, she said, can not only be part of a flexibility program but also part of a strength and endurance program. Additionally, the breathing techniques yoga and meditation employ have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce heart rates, Renfroe said.

“From a stress standpoint, it helps you to clear the mind and gives opportunities to increase oxygen intake,” she said. “Oftentimes, it can help people manage stress in terms of blocking out or getting away from stressors.”

A U.S. National Library of Medicine report notes in a review of comparison studies of yoga and other exercises that “in both healthy and diseased populations, yoga may be as effective as or better than exercise at improving a variety of health-related outcome measures.”  Original story here
