My Turn: Don’t Panic — Meditation Can Help

Margaret Finnegan tells her story of how she first developed panic attacks and how she has learned to deal with them. Meditation techniques worked well for many years, but gradually the need became less and so did the meditation.


So I did the smartest thing I ever did: I started meditating. I’ve been doing Vipassana meditation for about three years now. In Vipassana, we focus on the breath. When we realize our minds have wandered, we go back to the breath.

Years later when the old panic rose up to surprise Margaret she used her old mindful breathing meditation technique to calm the uncontrollable fear. She decided then and there that preventing these attacks was a better solution than waiting for them to come back again. She has been meditating for three years now and has no more panic attacks
