Key insights From Sharon Salzberg’s Simple Guided Mindfulness Practice
- Allowing our experience to come and go without chasing after or pushing away certain sounds can help us relax and be present.
- ust rest your attention on the normal natural breath, no need to make it deeper or different.
- If your attention wanders, it’s okay to recognize that gently let go and simply return to the feeling of the breath.
Step by Step Instructions for Sharon Salzberg’s Guided Mindfulness Practice Session
Step 1: Get Comfortable
Find a comfortable seated position. You can sit on a chair, a cushion, or the floor. Make sure your back is straight but not rigid. Rest your hands on your knees or in your lap. Close your eyes gently or leave them slightly open with a soft gaze.
Step 2: Listen to Sounds
Begin by focusing on the sounds around you. Tune into the sounds of my voice or any ambient noises. Notice the different qualities of these sounds—their pitch, volume, and rhythm. Allow each sound to come and go without trying to hold on to it or push it away. If a sound requires your attention, respond appropriately. Otherwise, let it wash over you like waves in the ocean.
Step 3: Feel Your Body
Shift your attention to the sensations in your body. Feel the weight of your body pressing down and the support of the Earth beneath you. Notice any points of contact, such as where your body meets the chair or floor. Feel the texture of your clothes against your skin. Sense the space around you and how it touches you, not by reaching out, but by being receptive to the environment.
Step 4: Focus on Your Breath
Bring your awareness to your breath. Notice the natural rhythm of your breathing without trying to control it. Feel the cool air entering your nostrils and the warm air leaving. Focus on the rise and fall of your chest or the gentle expansion and contraction of your abdomen. Allow yourself to rest in this awareness, simply observing each breath as it comes and goes.
Step 5: Stay Present
It’s natural for your mind to wander. When you notice your thoughts drifting to other things, gently bring your attention back to your breath. Don’t judge yourself for getting distracted. Acknowledge the thought, let it go, and return to the sensation of breathing. This process of returning to the breath is a crucial part of the practice.
Step 6: Conclude the Meditation
When you feel ready, slowly bring your awareness back to the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch if you need to. Gradually open your eyes or lift your gaze. Take a moment to notice how you feel before you continue with your day.
Closing Thoughts
Meditating regularly, even if only for a few minutes each day, can transform your experience of life. This simple practice helps cultivate a sense of peace, clarity, and presence. Make it a daily habit, and you’ll notice profound changes in your overall well-being and happiness.
